2107. Number of Unique Flavors After Sharing K Candies

Problem Explanation

Explanation

To solve this problem, we can use a HashMap to keep track of the count of each flavor of candies. We will continuously give candies to each person in a round-robin manner until we run out of candies or each person has received their share. We will then calculate the number of unique flavors left after sharing all candies.

Algorithm

  1. Create a HashMap flavorCount to store the count of each flavor of candies.
  2. Initialize a variable uniqueFlavors to store the number of unique flavors.
  3. Iterate over the candies array and update the count of each flavor in the flavorCount HashMap.
  4. Initialize a variable remainingCandies to store the total number of candies left to be shared.
  5. Initialize an index i to 0 to keep track of the current person receiving candies.
  6. While remainingCandies is greater than 0, distribute candies to each person in a round-robin manner:
    • If the current flavor of candy has remaining count in the flavorCount HashMap, give that candy to the current person, decrement the count, and increment uniqueFlavors.
    • If the current flavor count becomes 0, remove it from the flavorCount HashMap.
    • Increment i to move to the next person.
    • Decrement remainingCandies by 1.
  7. Return the uniqueFlavors as the result.

Time Complexity

The time complexity of this algorithm is O(n) where n is the number of candies.

Space Complexity

The space complexity of this algorithm is O(n) where n is the number of unique flavors of candies.

Solution Code

import java.util.HashMap;

class Solution {
    public int distributeCandies(int[] candies, int num_people) {
        HashMap<Integer, Integer> flavorCount = new HashMap<>();
        int uniqueFlavors = 0;

        for (int candy : candies) {
            flavorCount.put(candy, flavorCount.getOrDefault(candy, 0) + 1);
        }

        int remainingCandies = candies.length;
        int i = 0;

        while (remainingCandies > 0) {
            for (int flavor : flavorCount.keySet()) {
                int candiesToGive = Math.min(remainingCandies, flavorCount.get(flavor));
                flavorCount.put(flavor, flavorCount.get(flavor) - candiesToGive);
                remainingCandies -= candiesToGive;
                uniqueFlavors += candiesToGive;
                candies[i % num_people] += candiesToGive;
                i++;
                if (remainingCandies == 0) {
                    break;
                }
            }
        }

        return uniqueFlavors;
    }
}
