2358. Maximum Number of Groups Entering a Competition
Problem Explanation
Explanation
To maximize the number of groups, we need to sort the grades in descending order. Then, we iterate through the sorted grades and try to form groups while maintaining the conditions given in the problem. We can use a priority queue to keep track of the current sum of grades in a group. If adding the next grade to the current group makes the sum exceed the sum of the next group, we start a new group. The maximum number of groups formed will be the size of the priority queue.
Time Complexity: O(n log n) where n is the number of grades. Space Complexity: O(n) for the priority queue.
Solution Code
import java.util.Arrays;
import java.util.PriorityQueue;
class Solution {
public int maxNumOfSubgroups(int[] grades) {
Arrays.sort(grades);
PriorityQueue<Integer> pq = new PriorityQueue<>();
int groups = 0;
for (int grade : grades) {
if (pq.isEmpty() || grade < pq.peek()) {
pq.offer(grade);
groups++;
} else {
int top = pq.poll();
pq.offer(grade - top);
}
}
return groups;
