995. Minimum Number of K Consecutive Bit Flips

Problem Explanation

Explanation

To solve this problem, we can use a sliding window approach. We will iterate through the array nums from left to right. At each step, if the current element is 0 and we haven't flipped the current window starting at the current index, we will perform a flip. We will maintain a flipped array to keep track of whether a flip has been performed in the current window.

If we encounter a 0 and the current window has already been flipped, it means we need to perform another flip to make the current element 1. If it is not possible to perform a flip, we return -1.

The time complexity of this approach is O(n) where n is the length of the input array nums.

Solution Code

class Solution {
    public int minKBitFlips(int[] nums, int k) {
        int n = nums.length;
        int[] flipped = new int[n];
        int flips = 0;

        int totalFlips = 0;
        for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) {
            if (i >= k) {
                flips ^= flipped[i - k];
            }
            if ((nums[i] ^ flips) == 0) {
                if (i + k > n) return -1;
                flips ^= 1;
                totalFlips++;
                flipped[i] = 1;
            }
        }

        return totalFlips;
    }
}
